FNB Varsity Cup - NWU 30–22 TUKS
Top of the table clash in Potchefstroom between NWU and Tuks.
NWU Eagles claimed a hard-earned 30-22 victory over Tuks at the Fanie du Toit Sportsground, in a match that saw momentum swing but ultimately stay in favour of the home side.
NWU came out with intent from the first whistle, controlling both territory and possession in a dominant first-half display. Their ability to convert pressure into points gave them a strong platform, heading into the break with a commanding lead and the backing of a lively home crowd in Potchefstroom.
Despite the absence of their captain, the Eagles remained composed and structured, showing confidence in both attack and defence. Their physicality at the breakdown and discipline on both sides of the ball made it difficult for Tuks to find any real rhythm early on.
Tuks responded in the second half with far more urgency, tightening up their execution and applying pressure of their own. The visitors managed to close the gap with a series of well-worked phases, testing the Eagles’ defence and shifting the momentum for periods of the half.
However, NWU absorbed the pressure when it mattered most. They remained clinical in key moments, managing the game effectively to keep Tuks at arm’s length and close out an important win.
Scrumhalf Zack Serfontein played a key role in the result, delivering a standout performance that earned him the Player that Rocks award. His control around the base and ability to dictate tempo proved crucial in guiding NWU through both their dominant spells and the pressure phases late in the game.
The result sees NWU strengthen their position in the competition and go back to the top of the Varsity Cup log, while handing Tuks their first defeat of the campaign in what was a tightly contested Varsity Cup encounter.
